The work engages with Tapestry I, made in 1976 by Ken Knowlton and Lillian Schwartz at Bell Laboratories. The Jacquard takes its instructions from punched cards, and is the mechanical ancestor of the machine that generated the animation. Palo Alto, where the piece was shown, was a wool mill before it was an exhibition hall; the cloth was woven in Chieri, near Turin, where I come from, in a textile district parallel to Catalonia's. Algorithmic writing, made textile, returns to where it started.
