One elementary rule: at each step, draw a horizontal or vertical segment running between two lines already present. The rule alone cannot depict anything. What decides where each line falls is a second construction, a mathematical description of a scene made of spheres and cubes, which guides the subdivision and is never itself drawn. Close up there are only lines. From a distance there are bodies. A third procedure assembles sentences from an archive of statements about art and scatters their letters through the drawing, so reading one takes work. The arguments were made without intention. The only solid thing is the illusion.
